Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
Guided tour of a pilgrims village đź‘Ł

Since the twelfth century, the shrine of the pilgrimage of Compostela at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port has been a major stopping point before the crossing of the Pyrenees by the Roncesvalles pass. The four roads leading out of Puy en Velay, Vezelay, Arles and Tours, converge at the Pyrenees and here the pilgrims make a welcomed stop in one of the many hostels in the village. Even today, they perpetuate what millions of pilgrims before them have managed, to walk the passes of Cize and to cross the 1200 metres of vertical drop that separates them from Spain.

Classified amongst the most beautiful villages in France, you will be charmed by the authentic character of its streets, where stone predominates and where each house tells a little more of the history of its inhabitants.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port also offers spectacular views, especially from its citadel of Vauban, a testimony of its tumultuous past with the Spanish. From here you can contemplate the interior Basque Country and let yourself be captivated by the beauty of an utterly unspoilt countryside.
